It’s Easy to Support the Hospital’s Future with Legacy Gifts from IRAs

Kathy McLeod

Kathy McLeod has made Wentworth-Douglass Hospital a beneficiary of her IRA. Why? As a resident of Riverwoods in Durham, where the average age is 80, she sees the value of access to high-quality care. Because of the good care she and her family have received, Wentworth-Douglass Hospital is a part of her estate plan.

Kathy has the intelligence and experience to make a good plan. She earned an economics degree at Wellesley College and became a marketing/financial professional, handling investor relations and making presentations to institutional investors around the country. At the peak of her career, she became vice president of investor relations at Colgate-Palmolive Company and spent years working with the chairman on investor relations.

Her communities have benefited from Kathy’s leadership and expertise. She has a long history of service on nonprofit organization boards, including as trustee of Westover School, board member at Bald Peak Community Fund, and board member at the Wright Museum in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire.

Kathy retired in 1983 to spend more time with family, which now includes five stepchildren, ten grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren. Kathy’s beloved husband Ossie passed away in 2023 after a battle with cancer. Ossie was treated at Wentworth-Douglas Hospital, and Kathy is deeply appreciative of the compassion, skill, and expertise of Ossie’s care providers.

Because of her savviness in planning, Kathy recognizes the benefits of a nonprofit community hospital as her IRA beneficiary. Leaving a gift to a nonprofit in the form of an IRA beneficiary is a great way to maximize a gift to a nonprofit and minimize the tax burden on heirs.

“I see Wentworth-Douglass hospital as a good balance between the high-quality expertise of Mass General in Boston with the opportunity for local employees and local community focus. I would like to help raise the visibility of Wentworth-Douglass Hospital to gain support and patient awareness.”
